According to the NYT , the proposed policy would establish June 14th as a fee-free day at national parks, celebrating the former president’s birth. The same proposal, however, eliminates fee waivers for both Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth National Independence Day. One might wonder about the timing, especially when the same political figures who laud 'patriotism' seem to consistently
devalue observances tied to civil rights and Emancipation. Instead of addressing critical infrastructure needs or fully funding existing park maintenance (the National Park Service has a multi-billion dollar deferred maintenance backlog), the priority is a symbolic gesture for a public figure. This is less about public access to nature and more about inserting political pageantry where historical
recognition once stood. How many national holidays celebrating systemic oppression will we get before we realize it's a feature, not a bug?
