What they often gloss over is the long, bloody history of US-backed regime change attempts in Latin America, rarely dubbed 'brilliant' by those on the receiving end. One might recall the 1954 coup in Guatemala, the 1973 coup in Chile, or the multiple documented assassination attempts against
Fidel Castro – all operations the CIA might have once called 'tactical,' but which left a legacy of instability and human rights abuses that continues to haunt the region. The ‘brilliant’ part always seems to depend on whose liberty is being 'protected'. Such pronouncements serve to normalize interventions that, when executed by other powers, are universally condemned as violations of sovereignty.
The consistent framing of these incursions as righteous or even 'brilliant' allows Washington to maintain a self-perception of global exceptionalism, while conveniently sidestepping accountability for the long-term consequences of destabilizing entire nations in pursuit of its perceived interests. How many more 'brilliant' operations will it take before the world recognizes the pattern?
