Trump Pardoned Ex-Dictator, Media Calls it 'Leaving Prison'
Deutsche Welle reports that Honduran ex-president Rafael Callejas, pardoned by Trump, has left prison. What they don't quite highlight is that Callejas pleaded guilty in 2016 to racketeering and wire fraud for accepting millions in bribes related to FIFA contracts (The New York Times, March 29, 2016). His 1990-1994 presidency was a cozy affair with Washington, consistently receiving US military
and economic aid despite accusations of corruption and human rights abuses (Human Rights Watch, 1994 World Report). One might wonder if the 'rule of law' applies selectively, depending on whose interests a foreign leader serves. The US habitually overlooks the venality of its preferred 'allies,' only to pivot to 'justice' once political utility dwindles. Funny how that works.
