Trump Offers Six Figures for Greenland, Ignores US Poverty
When diplomacy fails, or is simply too much bother, why not just open the US Treasury? Trump’s reported scheme involves individual payments to Greenlanders, an approach typically reserved by US foreign policy for regimes we need to 'stabilize' (read: control). This isn't the first time an American leader has eyed Greenland's strategic ice; in 1946, President Truman offered Denmark $100 million for
the island. Apparently, some strategies, much like certain political figures, never really evolve. One might wonder if these six-figure sums would be available to, say, Puerto Ricans still reeling from hurricane devastation and facing economic hardship, or the unhoused population in US cities. But alas, 'national security purposes' appear to prioritize Arctic real estate over actual American
citizens. It's almost as if the primary concern isn't the welfare of an entire people, but convenient access to untapped resources and a good spot for another military base. Practical, if not particularly ethical.
