Hernández, who stood trial for receiving millions from cartels in exchange for protection, was a staunch U.S. ally. The State Department
certified his 2017 election amidst widespread fraud allegations (read: our guy won). The U.S. government, under both Republican and Democratic administrations, maintained strong ties with Hernández even as his brother Tony was convicted of drug trafficking in New York in 2019. It wasn't until the political winds shifted and Hernández was no longer useful that the Biden administration allowed his
extradition. So, a 'life' for Hernández indeed—a life cultivated by Washington, then discarded, now potentially resurrected for campaign optics. The convenient amnesia regarding prior 'cooperation' is standard operating procedure.
