The Independent rightly notes how Trump, while quoting biblical commands to care for children, fought to block SNAP food stamps, affecting some of the poorest kids. This isn't a new tactic. We've seen similar legislative gymnastics with the $14 billion in unconditional aid to Israel, recently pushed through Congress. While many of the same politicians decried 'socialism' for American families,
they found no such qualms pouring billions into foreign conflicts—much of it going to defense contractors, whose lobbyists, like those from AIPAC, ensure such 'aid' maintains a steady flow through congressional coffers. One might charitably call it 'selective empathy'; others would call it grotesque. How is it that the 'fiscal conservative' suddenly finds infinite funds for destruction abroad, yet
claims destitution when facing hungry children at home? The performative piety, much like the foreign aid, functions as a convenient distraction from the structural abandonment of domestic needs.
