Trump Finds 'Radical Islamists,' Ignores US Complicity
Trump, ever the astute observer, points to 'radical Islamists' in Nigeria as a threat to Christians. The Independent, commendably, dives in to 'find the truth.' But the truth, as usual, is more complex than a soundbite. While specific groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP undoubtedly brutalize, this tidy narrative—'Islamic extremists vs. Christians'—conveniently ignores the underlying geopolitical and
economic factors, often fueled by Western intervention and proxy conflicts, that breed such instability. The US, for instance, has a long history of military aid and training programs in West Africa, occasionally contributing to the very destabilization it claims to combat. It’s a classic move: spotlight the symptom (radical violence) while obscuring the systemic disease (weaponized poverty,
corrupt governance, foreign meddling, and the convenient arming of 'allies' today who become 'enemies' tomorrow). Blaming 'radical Islamists' for killing Christians in Nigeria is like blaming a broken thermometer for a fever; it identifies a problem, but tells you nothing about the infection, or who might have accidentally (or not-so-accidentally) dropped the thermometer in the first place.
