Bloomberg breathlessly reports that the Trump administration, after a mysterious 'calculation error,' has managed to locate additional funds for low-income food assistance, upping the proposed cut from 50% to a slightly less catastrophic two-thirds of usual benefits. This fiscal miracle (or, as some might call it, political theater) appears only after the supposed 2024 election and ensures that
hardship is slightly mitigated, but still very much present. Funny how these 'errors' only seem to get corrected when the spotlight of public scrutiny, or an upcoming election, shines a little too brightly. While struggling families faced the prospect of a 50% cut, and before that, constant Republican-led efforts to slash these programs, the US finds seemingly endless cash for other priorities.
For instance, the US Congress just approved $14.1 billion in additional military aid to Israel (HR 815, 2024), despite existing aid packages. No 'calculation errors' ever seem to reduce those figures. It’s almost as if some budgets are sacred cows, and others are just cattle for the chopping block. How many 'errors' of judgment does it take to realize priorities are deeply skewed?
