When the mainstream media breathlessly reports on Trump 'hailing' Syria's 'new' leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, after 'historic White House talks,' it's worth asking which history books they're reading. Al-Sharaa, formerly Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, head of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), spent years on the State Department's Specially Designated Global Terrorist list, with a $10 million bounty on his head as
recently as 2021 for leading al-Qaeda's Syrian franchise. No mention of that pesky detail, though. It merely 'appears' he's now rebranded from jihadi warlord to 'new leader' fit for White House praise. The media narrative conveniently pivots from condemning designated terrorists to celebrating them as 'partners' the moment it suits the geopolitical agenda. One might wonder if the White House has
simply updated its 'terrorist' list to 'potential ally' roster, depending on who's in charge. How many 'historic talks' does it take for a designated terrorist to become a 'leader' capable of 'doing it' (whatever 'it' is this week)?
