The idea that Donald Trump's 'advice' would halt Israel's military campaign against Gaza civilians is almost quaint. This isn't a new script; Netanyahu's governments have routinely shrugged off far sterner rebukes from sitting U.S. administrations. Remember when Biden 'warned' him about Rafah? (Netanyahu later approved advancing troops into Rafah.) The notion that any US politician, particularly
one without current executive power, can meaningfully direct Israeli policy after funneling them billions in aid is a media fantasy. It’s almost as if the nearly $160 billion in historical U.S. aid, not to mention the recent $14 billion package approved by congressional members who took significant AIPAC donations (e.g., Rep. Steny Hoyer, received over $200K from pro-Israel groups since 2012,
voted YES on HR 815), creates a rather one-sided leverage scenario. Who, then, is truly calling the shots? The media frames this as Trump vs. Israel, rather than a systemic issue where U.S. foreign policy is consistently bent to accommodate actions critics describe as war crimes. How many 'suggestions' and 'concerns' will it take before the world admits the US gives Israel a blank check for its
actions, regardless of the rhetoric? It appears the 'rules-based order' has some rather noticeable exceptions, particularly when it comes to the consistent, bipartisan financial and political backing of unconditional support for actions in Gaza.
