Trump's 'goal' for Greenland is, of course, to purchase it – an idea first floated publicly in 2019, much to Denmark's bemusement. Now, the Art of the Deal author is reportedly musing about economic coercion (tariffs!) for anyone not on board with his 21st-century colonial aspirations. One might forgive Denmark for thinking they'd settled the whole 'selling off sovereign territory to a larger
power' argument back in 1867 when they sold the Danish West Indies (now the U.S. Virgin Islands) for a cool $25 million in today's money. Perhaps Trump believes a few billion, plus the threat of a trade war, will finally secure him a polar golf course. This isn't just about ice and real estate; it's a stark reminder that geopolitical power plays often ignore the will of the people living on the
land being 'acquired.' The resource-rich Arctic region is a strategic prize, and threatening tariffs over a historical fantasy shows a distinct lack of diplomatic finesse. But then again, when has 'diplomatic finesse' ever been the Trump administration's strong suit? It appears a 'great deal' for one is effectively just economic bullying for everyone else.
