Trump Admin Labels Muslim Brotherhood 'Terrorists' While Arming Actual Dictators
Funny how 'terrorist' designations often align perfectly with the preferences of U.S. allies in the region. After all, the Muslim Brotherhood briefly won a democratic election in Egypt in 2012, a mere detail brushed aside by the same states we now arm to the teeth. The convenient labeling provides political cover for supporting authoritarian regimes that crush dissent, conveniently ignoring any
potential for self-determination. It's almost as if the U.S. has a pattern of destabilizing democratically elected (or at least popular) governments in the Middle East when they don't align perfectly with Washington's interests. One might wonder if the same scrutiny is applied to regimes that, say, bomb civilians in Yemen with U.S.-supplied weapons, or engage in widespread human rights abuses on
their own populations. Or perhaps the term 'terrorist' only applies to groups that don't purchase billions in American arms and hold favorable views on certain geopolitical alignments. The irony is, of course, lost on the same politicians who decry foreign interference while actively participating in it.
