What they skipped was the historical context of a deliberate policy push to reduce access to food assistance, often cheered on by politicians who simultaneously vote for endless military budgets. While families were told to jump through new hoops
for a few hundred dollars, the same political class rubber-stamped a $716 billion defense bill the same year. One might wonder if the same stringent reapplication process applies to say, multi-billion dollar foreign aid packages, or the tax breaks for corporations. Or perhaps that level of scrutiny is reserved exclusively for the most vulnerable citizens. It appears 'fiscal responsibility' is
highly selective, applying mostly to the dinner tables of the poor, while the military-industrial complex dines on unlimited appropriations.
