The Trump administration, which infamously slashed refugee admissions to historic lows, suddenly found its heart for a very specific demographic: white South African farmers. Newsweek, reporting in 2018, detailed the administration's stated concern for 'land expropriation without compensation.' This sudden compassion for property rights, however, seems to have been curiously absent for the
millions of people displaced by U.S.-backed conflicts in places like Yemen or Syria, whose ancestral lands and homes were utterly destroyed. While the administration cited humanitarian concerns for these 'white' refugees, one might recall the general policy of ' zero tolerance' for asylum seekers at the southern border. The optics are glaring: certain refugees are noble victims of 'persecution,'
while others are 'illegals' threatening our borders. It appears 'humanitarian' is a word whose definition shifts conveniently with skin color and geopolitical alignment.
