One might recall similar rhetoric accompanying the deployment of federal agents during the 2020 protests, framed as 'law and order' operations, conveniently overlooking the specific targeting of Black Lives Matter demonstrators. The narrative
then, as now, often sidesteps the socio-economic roots of urban unrest, preferring a militarized response. The irony is not lost on those who remember the same administration's enthusiasm for 'border security' hundreds of miles away from actual borders, while urban centers, grappling with decades of systemic neglect and underinvestment, suddenly become a priority for military-style intervention.
It appears some administrations are always ready to 'secure' a particular 'border' — especially when it allows them to quash dissent or project an image of strength, rather than address underlying issues.
