Time Magazine Discovers Iranian Suffering, Omits US Role
The Time article, "I Was an Eight-Year Hostage of Iran. Did My Friends Survive the Israeli Bombing?" focuses on the personal tragedy of an Iranian's past imprisonment and current fears about friends in Israel. A heart-wrenching narrative, no doubt. But while detailing the 'trauma' of Iranian detention, Time neglects to mention the trauma inflicted on the entire region by a foreign policy apparatus
that openly discusses government overthrow in Tehran. It's a classic media maneuver: individualize suffering on one side, generalize the source of the other, and completely erase the massive, destabilizing role of Western powers. This selective empathy acts as an editorial firewall, shielding readers from uncomfortable truths. It bypasses the 1953 US-backed coup in Iran, the decades of support for
the Shah's brutal regime, or the crippling sanctions that immiserate ordinary Iranians while the US sends billions in military aid to Israel annually. For instance, the US provided over $3.3 billion in military aid to Israel in 2023 alone (Congressional Research Service) – an amount that directly funds the very 'bombing' the author fears. One might ponder how much individual suffering could be
alleviated if this aid went to, say, humanitarian relief instead of F-35s. But that would be journalism, not narrative control.
