The Hill Watches Protests, Forgets to Mention Why ICE Exists
When The Hill covers protests over an ICE shooting, ( watch live! ) they present it as a tragic reaction to an isolated event. Conveniently absent is any critical examination of ICE's history as an agency born from post-9/11 hysteria, routinely documented by organizations like the ACLU for rights abuses. They show the effect, never the cause—because to question ICE's existence (or funding) would
be too 'radical' for prime-time consumption. The media watches us watch the protestors, who are protesting the very same unchecked state power that these outlets rarely question. It's a neat trick: report on the community's outrage without ever inquiring why the community is so consistently outraged by institutions generously funded by taxpayer dollars. One might wonder who benefits from such
selective storytelling. (Hint: It’s not the taxpayer, nor the shot victim.)
