Meanwhile, ICE, established under the Department of Homeland Security in 2003, is the direct byproduct of post-9/11 fear-mongering and the bipartisan consensus that immigrants are a national security
threat. (Remember the Patriot Act? Good times.) It's almost as if mainstream news prefers to focus on the immediate spark rather than the decades of legislative kindling – fueled by both Republican and Democratic administrations – that built the bonfire. One might wonder if reporting on the systemic issues, like the ever-expanding budget for "border security" that funnels taxpayer money into
private detention centers, would be too inconvenient a truth to print. Why critique the machine when you can just highlight a cog grinding?
