The Hill Discovers 'Human Rights' When America Isn't First
When The Hill publishes a piece titled 'America First is putting human rights last,' it’s clear they're concerned about global morality. But whose morality, exactly? This hand-wringing typically emerges when US geopolitical interests face perceived threats, rarely when US allies are committing the same offenses. One might easily forget the unwavering support—political, financial, and
military—given to regimes with documented human rights abuses, provided those regimes align with US strategic objectives (or, more accurately, AIPAC's objectives). Perhaps 'America First' isn't putting human rights last so much as ensuring they're selectively applied, a long-standing tradition. The concern for human rights, in this context, often seems to inversely correlate with how many F-35s we
sell to the offending party. The Hill's sudden enlightenment on global ethics conveniently sidesteps how taxpayer dollars consistently prop up systems that suppress human rights, provided they're suppressing the 'right' people.
