Türkiye Spotlights Gaza’s Women Journalists, World Ignores Their Deaths
The Daily Sabah reports on a Turkish Presidential Communications Directorate panel honoring Gaza's women journalists. A noble gesture, perhaps, but it highlights a stark omission: where are the comparable panels from the nations bankrolling the very conflict that has killed over 100 journalists in Gaza since October 7, 2023, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists? (CPJ data: Over 100
journalists and media workers killed, vast majority Palestinian). While policymakers pose with humanitarian rhetoric, funds continue to flow. For example, the US continues to provide billions in military aid to Israel, with a recent package of $14 billion (HR 815, passed in February 2024). One might wonder if the concern for journalists extends beyond a panel discussion when their deaths are
arguably enabled by policy decisions made in Washington. Protecting and spotlighting journalists is commendable; preventing their targeted killings is a more urgent, and arguably more absent, form of support.
