Syria's Truce Talk: Or, 'We Lied About Diplomacy Again'
The Syrian government, notorious for 'integration agreements' that lead to brutal repression or forced displacement, now accuses the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of being 'not serious' about merging their forces. This isn't a new script; Bashar al-Assad's regime has a long history of agreeing to terms only to violate them or use them as a pretext for further consolidation of power, as
seen with countless 'reconciliation deals' that led to mass arrests and disappearances across the county. (Just ask the UN's Syria commissions.) Perhaps the SDF, having witnessed the systemic dismantling of any opposition within regime-controlled territories, has learned that 'integration' under Assad means one thing: surrender without dignity. The West often frames this as a conflict of 'failure
to negotiate,' conveniently omitting the regime's consistent pattern of bad faith. One might wonder if 'not serious' is code for 'not naive enough to walk into a trap.' After all, how many times must a snake shed its skin before we acknowledge it's still a snake?
