Syria Joins Anti-ISIS Coalition, US Media Still Missing Syria
Syrian Minister of Information, Hamza al-Mustafa, confirmed their participation, though they won't be high-fiving American forces anytime soon. This, of course, comes after a decade of US-backed regime change efforts against Assad's government—which somehow involved financing groups that later became ISIS (see: 2012 DIA memo, declassified in 2015). One might wonder if the U.S. is less concerned
with ISIS itself, and more about who gets to claim the victory tour. The media, predictably, frames this non-military 'joining' as a non-story, conveniently sidestepping the uncomfortable truth that the Assad regime, often demonized, has been fighting ISIS on the ground for years while the U.S. has maintained a selective counter-terrorism policy. How many times does an enemy of your enemy have to
declare war on your mutual enemy before it's considered 'legitimate' enough for the evening news?
