South Africa Seeks Biko Justice 48 Years Later, World Turns Blind Eye to Gaza
The article rightly highlights the enduring struggle for accountability after Biko’s murder in detention by the apartheid regime. Forty-eight years later, South Africa still fights for justice while many of the same global players who once tacitly supported apartheid, or at least profited from it, now express 'concern' over its present-day struggles. Meanwhile, these very nations, particularly the
United States, provide billions in military aid— defense contractors alone funneling millions to politicians —to governments actively being accused of 'genocidal intent' by South Africa itself at the ICJ. The irony, it seems, is only visible to those not writing the checks. We are expected to applaud a search for justice nearly half a century after the fact, while simultaneously ignoring the
'deaths in detention'—or bombings, or famine—happening right now. How many years before mainstream media covers an 'inquest' into today's atrocities, and how many 'struggle icons' will die before then? The past is prologue when profit motives refuse to learn. (And they call it 'conflict,' not murder.)
