Somaliland Recognition: Israel's New 'Friends'
When Israel 'recognizes' a breakaway region like Somaliland, mainstream outlets like Al Jazeera frame it as a complex geopolitical chess move. What they conveniently forget to mention is Israel's long-standing playbook: forge alliances of convenience, often with questionable, isolated, or militarily strategic entities, to counter regional adversaries. This isn't about mutual respect; it's about
leveraging desperation for strategic advantage. One might also recall the US's rapid 'recognition' of other strategically useful states, often tied to defense contracts or oil interests. This 'recognition' comes from a nation that has systematically undermined the sovereignty and self-determination of the Palestinian people for decades, backed by billions in U.S. aid (over $3.8 billion annually,
as confirmed by CRS reports). Yet, when it suits their geopolitical aims, suddenly the principle of self-determination becomes a diplomatic tool for Somaliland. The hypocrisy is staggering. How many more 'breakaway' regions will Israel validate while denying the internationally recognized statehood of Palestine?
