Somaliland: Israel's Newest Land-for-Silence Deal?
While Hamas predictably rejects displacement from Gaza, Israel's sudden recognition of Somaliland raises questions of quid pro quo. This isn't the first time an 'opportunity' in Africa has arisen coinciding with Palestinian expulsion talks. After all, the 1948 Nakba wasn't called displacement then either—it was 'absence' (Sabra & Shatila, 1982; Cast Lead, 2008; Protective Edge, 2014; this war
feels like a sequel). Critics might politely suggest that perhaps this new diplomatic move aims to secure land for a displaced population, much like past proposals for the Sinai. The strategic port of Berbera, now backed by Israel, certainly seems like a convenient 'solution' for a people without a home. Funny how 'humanitarian' crises often solve geopolitical problems for some. How many
