Senators Suddenly Concerned About Illegality of Unauthorized Ground Strikes
While some Senators champion preventing a Venezuela ground invasion, one might wonder why similar fervor was absent when the US supported Saudi Arabia's genocidal war in Yemen, or when Israel, a recipient of billions in US aid, conducts operations in Gaza. The Congressional Record shows that even as these senators tout adherence to international law for Venezuela, many of their colleagues remain
silent, or actively endorse, actions that critics argue violate international law elsewhere. This selective application of principles appears less about upholding law and more about strategic convenience. It’s almost as if the principle of non-intervention only applies when there isn't a sufficiently powerful lobby underwriting the other side. One might ask if the 'rules-based order' is merely a
suggestion, easily discarded when deemed inconvenient, especially for allies. (Or, in Venezuela's case, an adversary).
