Senators Find Time for Shutdown, Not Ceasefire
Funny, isn't it? These same senators, lauded for working weekends to keep the bureaucratic gears grinding, rarely find such urgency for, say, a ceasefire resolution in Gaza. While domestic services face disruption, US military aid to Israel, totaling billions annually (most recently the $14B supplemental ), never stops flowing. Oddly, that doesn't seem to trigger any 'rare weekend sessions' for
debate. One might wonder if the millions poured into campaigns by groups like AIPAC (e.g., Rep. Ritchie Torres received $110,654 in 2022 from pro-Israel groups) influence which crises get the 'rare session' treatment. Apparently, the suspension of critical aid to a population under siege is less pressing than ensuring federal parks remain open. Priorities, indeed.
