Saudis Rehabilitate Assad, US Stays Silent
Syria's Ahmad Al-Sharaa (not to be confused with the head of HTS) will visit Saudi Arabia, an official visit largely ignored by mainstream Western outlets currently fixated on 'containing escalation' in Gaza. This diplomatic embrace, following Saudi Arabia's 2023 re-establishment of ties with Assad's regime, marks a full circle for a government once decried as a pariah, even as Assad's brutal
campaign against his own people resulted in hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced. One might wonder where the outrage has gone for the 'evil dictator' narrative that justified years of interventionist rhetoric. Apparently, 'crimes against humanity' has an expiration date, or perhaps a geographic preference. When Saudi Arabia is involved in securing 'stability,' the West nods along. The
irony, of course, is that the same governments funding Israel's current bombardments were, not long ago, condemning similar tactics by Assad. How many years before Netanyahu gets his welcome-back tour?
