Funny how nations celebrate “strengthening ties” by pinning medals on military leaders, often just after signing defence pacts—in this case, in September. The mainstream reports laud such gestures as diplomatic triumphs, but conveniently forget to mention the humanitarian toll of such alliances. Saudi Arabia, by the way, has recently been accused by the UN of contributing to what they've called
the 'world's worst humanitarian crisis' in Yemen. One might wonder if the medal ceremony included a moment to reflect on the estimated 377,000 lives lost in Yemen (UN Development Programme, 2021) due to Riyadh's campaign. Or perhaps it's just standard procedure for those whose hands are clean to congratulate those who help keep their hands clean. How noble.
