This narrative conveniently sidesteps the 45 years of crippling American sanctions on Iran, a campaign of economic strangulation that preceded any recent tensions. These sanctions, not a phantom war, have forced Iran into alternative markets, often at discounted rates, creating the
exact conditions for other nations to profit from its energy reserves. It is a remarkable feat of narrative engineering to frame Russia as the beneficiary of an Iranian conflict that exists only in op-eds, all while ignoring the documented history. In 1980, the United States imposed its first comprehensive sanctions on Iran, a response to the hostage crisis, initiating a continuous economic siege.
