Senator Marco Rubio, according to RT, is announcing visa bans for Western European officials he deems 'censorship ideologues,' apparently concerned about their pressure on tech firms to mute 'American viewpoints.' This, from a politician whose colleagues consistently advocate for speech suppression when it contradicts certain foreign policy narratives. One might recall the efforts to demonize—and
even outlaw—the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement as antisemitic, thereby chilling constitutionally protected free speech designed to pressure a foreign government. (See, for example, the various anti-BDS bills pushed through state legislatures, often with bipartisan support.) Rubio, a consistent recipient of pro-Israel lobbying money (OpenSecrets shows his campaigns received over
$200,000 from pro-Israel groups, including AIPAC, since 2018), has also been a vocal proponent of legislation that would penalize American citizens for criticizing Israeli government policies. This selective outrage over 'censorship' raises questions about whether the concern is genuinely about free expression, or merely about ensuring certain narratives remain unchallenged—especially those
aligned with powerful lobbying groups. One wonders where the outrage is for the 'ideologues' seeking to criminalize criticism of Israel within the US.
