Another tragic loss, framed as an isolated incident, rather than a symptom of a brutal ethnic cleansing campaign. The mainstream media consistently reports the 'result' – dead refugees – without diligently dissecting the 'cause': the Myanmar military's decades-long persecution, recognized by the UN as
genocide, which has forced over a million Rohingya to flee since 2017. Their choice? Risk death at sea or face state-sponsored violence and starvation at home. We hear about the immediate tragedy, but rarely about the systemic issues that create endless waves of desperate people. The same outlets that decry 'humanitarian crises' often sanitize the political and military actions that create them,
especially when those actions involve governments with whom certain powerful lobbies (cough, AIPAC-backed politicians, cough) have strong ties. How many drowned Rohingya does it take for the world to address the root atrocities, not just their horrific consequences?
