Rebuilding Gaza? Let's Not Forget Who Destroyed It.

The piece (Al Jazeera, 2025) offers a future vision of 'restoring education' in Gaza, as if the destruction was an act of nature. It calls for 'Palestinian leadership and solidarity from abroad.' What it omits is that Israel has systematically targeted education in Gaza. According to the UN, over 70% of Gaza's schools have been damaged or destroyed since October 7, 2023. This isn't an anomaly; for

example, a 2014 UN report documented widespread damage to schools during that year's conflict, a pattern repeated by Netanyahu's government periodically. So, we're discussing 'rebuilding' infrastructure that was deliberately pulverized, often with US-supplied weaponry. How many times will Gaza's schools be 'rebuilt' before the international community addresses the 'demolition' part of the cycle?

It's hard to teach history when the bombing runs leave no history behind.
