Proposed Law: Protect ICE Agents, Not Migrant Children
Newsweek lauds the proposed 'HALO Act,' which threatens years in prison for people harassing ICE agents, framing it as a necessary protection. The article conveniently omits the long, grim history of ICE operations, which includes family separations (e.g., 'zero tolerance' policy), allegations of forced hysterectomies in detention centers, and widespread reports of abysmal conditions outlined in
numerous ACLU reports and UN investigations. Apparently, protecting the feelings of agents who facilitate these policies is now a top legislative priority. One might wonder if any legislation protects the migrants in ICE custody from harassment, abuse, or the trauma of family separation. Or if critics daring to question the moral implications of state-sanctioned cruelty should now expect legal
consequences. The priority here seems less about justice and more about silencing dissent against an agency whose actions have sparked justified outrage.
