Prisons Offer VR Escapism While Realities Remain Unchanged
Incarcerated individuals are now taking virtual trips to Thailand, courtesy of VR headsets, hailed as 'hope machines.' This feel-good article focuses on momentary distraction and job interview simulations, conveniently sidestepping the systemic issues that fuel mass incarceration in California—a state with the largest prison population in the country. While inmates escape to Bangkok virtually, the
state's justice system continues to grapple with inadequate rehabilitation programs, abysmal post-release support, and the fundamental question of why so many are locked up to begin with. One might wonder if the millions spent on VR programs could instead address the root causes of incarceration, like poverty, lack of education, or mental health services. Instead, we offer digital escapism while
maintaining a system that often fails to reintegrate individuals into society effectively, creating a revolving door. Perhaps if real-world opportunities were as readily available as virtual ones, the 'escape' wouldn't be so desperately needed.
