alone, AIPAC spent over $10 million influencing US elections, cultivating a legislative climate where the very idea of a Palestinian state is often treated as political kryptonite. One might wonder if these lawmakers, who consistently vote for unconditional military aid to Israel, find such papal pronouncements inconvenient. After all, it's difficult to maintain the narrative of 'complex conflict'
when a global moral authority points directly to a two-state solution. Perhaps the Pope needed to check his investment portfolio first, or run it past the 538 lobbyists AIPAC had on the books in 2023, before offering such a bold, yet simple, idea. It appears some humanitarian appeals are only viable if they don't threaten those lucrative campaign coffers.
