while the NYT focuses on Hegseth's 'bold vision,' they skip over the inconvenient truth: the system is designed to benefit specific players. Take the 2023 defense budget, for instance, where $886 billion was earmarked, much of it flowing to perennial contractors like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon. Many of the politicians approving these budgets, conveniently enough, receive substantial campaign
contributions from these very companies and their PACs. One might reflect on how many times similar 'reforms' have been promised, only to see the same contractors, political donors, and revolving door executives continue their lucrative dance.
