CBS breathlessly reports on F-35s and Marine exercises, citing 'sources' that the Pentagon is gearing up for 'possible military action' in Venezuela. What the report conveniently omits is the US's long, storied history of 'democracy promotion' in Latin America, which regularly involves destabilization, coups, and sanctions designed to make populations suffer enough to overthrow their governments.
From Chile in '73 to Honduras in '09, the playbook stays disturbingly consistent, rarely leading to actual democracy, but always to 'US interests.' One might wonder if this sudden concern for Venezuela's internal affairs aligns with its massive oil reserves (the largest in the world, by the way) or its refusal to toe the geopolitical line. When 'sources say' the Pentagon is preparing for war, it's
usually less about human rights and more about resource control and strategic dominance. How many 'possible military actions' were launched after 'sources said' so, and how many of those actually improved anything for the local populace?
