Pentagon 'Demands' Less Scrutiny, Media 'Shocked'
While DW highlights the Pentagon's new rules, which limit what can be shown or said by journalists embedded with troops, the real story is the selective outrage. These same outlets have spent months sanitizing aerial bombardment as 'conflict' and filtering out the visceral reality of US-supplied weapons tearing through Palestinian families. (CNN, remember when you blurred Gaza's dead children?)
The pushback is less about truth and more about access to 'official' narratives. When the Pentagon needs image control for its global operations, suddenly the 'free press' finds its voice. Yet, where was this principled stand when Israel, a recipient of U.S. military aid, systematically targeted journalists in Gaza? We recall Shireen Abu Akleh, fatally shot by an IDF soldier in 2022, and the over
100 journalists killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023. The lack of equal fury raises questions about what 'freedom of the press' truly means to these organizations. They'll fight for the right to embed, but not for the right to report unfiltered truth from America's allies.
