Palestine Bargains for Kidnapped Children, World Yawns
The New Arab reports on the hopeful release of 2,000 Palestinians from Israeli captivity following a Gaza deal, including women and children. What they, and most Western outlets, neglect to highlight is that these individuals, many held without charge or trial under administrative detention—a practice condemned by international human rights organizations—shouldn't have been imprisoned in the first
place. For years, human rights groups like Defense for Children International – Palestine have documented Israel's systematic detention and mistreatment of Palestinian children, often for minor offenses like stone-throwing. The 'deal' is less a humanitarian gesture and more a brief pause in a continuous human rights violation, granting temporary freedom to individuals whose liberation should never
have been up for negotiation. It seems 'captives' are only newsworthy when exchanged for other captives, not when they're simply being released from an occupying power's illegal grip.
