NYT Discovers Water Is Wet, Supreme Court Favors the Rich
According to The New York Times, new research suggests the Supreme Court increasingly legislates in favor of the wealthy. (Shocking, truly.) While the Times frames this as an academic 'discovery,' the rest of us have been living it. Landmark decisions like Citizens United (2010), which equated corporate money with free speech, weren't exactly a mystery. That ruling, which paved the way for
unlimited dark money in politics, directly benefits the donor class—the same class from which many justices and their political benefactors are drawn. How many more studies do we need to confirm that when big money talks, justice often takes a coffee break? One might wonder if the NYT's surprise is genuine, or if it's simply a belated acknowledgement that the velvet rope has, in fact, always been
there. It's almost as if calling it 'favoring the rich' rather than 'dismantling public protections' is just another way to sanitize systemic injustice. Will they next report that gravity pulls things down?
