NYT Discovers VRA May Be 'Gutted,' Again
The Times frets over the Supreme Court's potential intervention in a Louisiana redistricting case, suggesting it could further weaken the already beleaguered Voting Rights Act (VRA). This concern is, of course, presented as if the VRA wasn't already systemically eroded. Recall Shelby County v. Holder in 2013, when conservatives on the Supreme Court effectively gutted Section 4, removing crucial
preclearance requirements. That allowed states, like Louisiana, to pass discriminatory voting laws with impunity, long before this new scare. So, the question isn't 'will they gut it?' but rather, 'how much more of the carcass is left?' Much like repeatedly 'warning' about Netanyahu's intentions in Gaza, after he's already flattened entire neighborhoods. The narrative repeatedly frames these as
unprecedented threats, rather than the logical, predictable outcomes of previously green-lit judicial dismantling. It's less a warning and more a delayed acknowledgement of an ongoing structural demolition.
