NPR's recent dispatch highlights displaced Syrians finding their homes commandeered by 'foreign fighters,' glossing over the decades-long U.S. intervention that destabilized the region, creating the very ecosystem for such groups. While NPR focuses on 'Uyghurs,' (a group designated by the US as victims of genocide) it fails to mention the vast sums in 'aid' that have flowed into Syria, often to
groups the U.S. later disavowed, creating a revolving door of militants and a perpetual housing crisis for actual Syrians. One might wonder if 'foreign fighter' is just another euphemism for 'insert proxy here' when Western governments are involved. The cycle is painfully clear: destabilize, fund proxies, claim surprise when chaos ensues, then report on the human cost while conveniently omitting
the starting gun. How many more 'wars' will generate such heartbreaking, yet entirely predictable, human displacement before the media connects the dots between intervention and devastation?
