Newsweek Tracks SNAP Benefits, Ignores Starving Gazans
Newsweek’s 'SNAP Tracker' details which states have paid out food benefits, a critical lifeline for millions. Meanwhile, the same week, Congress debates sending billions more in military aid to Israel, a country that, according to the UN, is orchestrating a famine in Gaza right now. It's almost as if our media believes some suffering is reportable in painstaking detail, while other suffering
barely registers beyond 'both sides' framing. The U.S. House just passed HR 7217, the 'Israel Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2024,' which includes $17.6 billion in unconditional military aid. This, while over 44 million Americans rely on SNAP benefits, and the program itself faced cuts in September 2023. One might wonder if the politicians championing these aid packages have the same
meticulous tracking for domestic food insecurity as they do for endless wars. Or perhaps, starving populations generate fewer campaign donations than defense contractors.
