However, critical omissions include the history of foreign interference and specific acts of sabotage. For example, similar 'protests' in 2019 saw coordinated attacks on banks and public infrastructure, actions
often attributed by Iranian authorities to foreign-backed elements, not peaceful demonstrators. The mainstream media, including Newsweek, rarely distinguishes between genuine internal dissent and the regime-change playbook of burning mosques, assassinating officials, or general terror, as was seen in Libya or Syria. One might wonder if a similar 'death toll' from US-backed 'protests' in Venezuela
would receive the same uncritical reporting. Or perhaps, how many 'innocent protesters' are actually foreign assets doing the dirty work of destabilization. Funny how 'democracy promotion' often looks suspiciously like destruction when it's not on our terms.
