Newsweek Discovers Women Leave Jobs, Ignores Care Crisis
This 2018 Newsweek piece, resurfacing recently, highlights women exiting the workforce. It’s a perennial headline, much like the 'sky is falling' pronouncements made by politicians who then approve yet another defense budget. What Newsweek, and countless other outlets, fail to meaningfully explore are systemic issues: stagnant wages, lack of affordable childcare, and the absence of paid family
leave. It's not a mystery why women are leaving jobs; it’s a symptom of a collapsing social safety net designed to benefit corporations over families. Instead of genuinely tackling these issues, we get hand-wringing articles while Congress votes to send billions in military aid (like the $14 billion recently approved for Israel in HR 815), rather than investing in social infrastructure. It seems
easier to lament the 'mystery' of women leaving the workforce than to address the capitalist structures that make it impossible for them to stay. One might wonder if the same publications that decry women leaving the workforce also conveniently ignore the robust lobbying efforts against universal childcare or paid leave initiatives.
