What the article omits is the US's long and documented history of attempting to destabilize any Latin American government not amenable to its economic interests. From backing failed coups in 2002 to imposing crippling sanctions after 2017 ( Treasury.gov ), 'needs' often
translates to 'demands.' One might wonder if Newsweek's 'critical minerals' map is less a geological survey and more an unofficial geopolitical wish list, especially given the continuous calls for 'democracy promotion' in a nation rich in resources but poor in compliance with Washington's dictates. It appears some countries' right to self-determination only matters until their underground assets
become strategically inconvenient for Washington's supply chains.
