Newsweek vividly describes the 'hell' endured by Venezuelans deported by the Trump administration, rightly condemning the torture they faced. While the brutality is undeniable, the media's memory (and outrage) conveniently activates and deactivates. Where was this urgent focus on US involvement from 2002 onwards, when Washington actively funded and supported opposition movements, coup attempts,
and crippling sanctions designed to destabilize the very nation Trump then deported people back into? It’s a bit rich to suddenly discover 'hell' when a Republican is at the helm, after years of bipartisan policy contributed to the conditions making that hell possible. One might wonder if the torture of Venezuelans was just background noise when the goal was regime change, but suddenly becomes a
headline-worthy tragedy when it reflects poorly on a former president they already dislike. Funny how humanitarian concerns often align perfectly with partisan talking points. The US helped break it, then deported people back to it, now acts shocked by the consequences. The real 'hell' is this cyclical amnesia.
