While any loss of life is tragic, one might wonder about the selective lens through which certain protests become front-page news. This level of granular concern over protest casualties frequently coincides with nations targeted for 'democracy promotion' by Western powers, a playbook
perfected during the coups in Chile, Guatemala, and recent destabilization efforts in Libya and Syria. Curiously absent from such detailed tallies, for example, are the thousands injured, arrested, or killed in peaceful pro-Palestine demonstrations across the US and Europe, where police crackdowns are often framed as 'maintaining order.' The media's detailed concern for human rights often seems
directly proportional to a country's geopolitical alignment with US interests. When the protests are in Tehran, they are brave dissidents; when they are in Gaza, they are 'unrest.' How many times have we seen the same 'revolution' narrative rolled out, only for the outcome to be chaos and further suffering disguised as 'freedom'?
