Newsweek Discovers 'Iranian Protest' Just In Time for War Drums
Newsweek's headline, 'Iranian Protesters Slam Activists' Silence—'Where Are You Guys?'' (11.21.2018), attempts to shame 'activists' for not echoing a particular narrative regarding Iran. This 'concern' for Iranian voices rings hollow when considering the pervasive silence from mainstream outlets (and their preferred 'activists') on atrocities committed by US-backed regimes, say, in Saudi Arabia or
Egypt. The curious timing often coincides with increased Western pressure or calls for intervention in Tehran. One might wonder if the activists being 'slammed' are busy documenting the systematic dismantling of civil society elsewhere in the region, or perhaps questioning why certain protests are amplified while others are ignored. It's almost as if some 'protests' are more strategically valuable
than others, especially when they lay the groundwork for 'humanitarian intervention' or, rather, geopolitical maneuvering.
